Please check out my disclosure policy for more details! If you want to impress a meat-eating skeptic with a vegan sloppy joe recipe, start by picking up Upton’s Naturals ground seitan, fer serious. This is the first time I’ve ever used Upton’s Naturals Seitan in a recipe, and I have no idea why I waited so long to try it. So yum!
I figured a safe bet for trying out the product would be in sloppy joes, and I found this recipe from Jolly Green Jane to try it out.
The recipe is really easy and the other Sloppy Joe Mix mentioned also has some fake meat bits in it, so it makes a lot of food. It’s going pretty fast in our house of two, though, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about. The only thing I changed was replaced the BBQ sauce mentioned with ¼ cup of brown sugar.
So, here’s my modified version of the recipe:
Ingredients
- 1 box Fantastic Worlds Sloppy Joe Mix
- 1 box Upton’s Naturals Ground Seitan
- 3 oz tomato paste
- 1 small onion, chopped
- ¼ cup brown sugar
Directions
Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the sloppy joe mix and chopped onion and bring down to medium-low. Once the water starts to cook down, add in the tomato paste, brown sugar, and Upton’s. Cook until mix is thick and warmed through, about 5 minutes. Add more water if it needs it, but for me it was the perfect consistency. Makes lots and lots of sloppy joes.
