Don’t worry, we’re still in the Dairy State, so this can still be Dairy-Free State. But now, instead of being closer to Chicago, we’re closer to the Twin Cities. While I’m sad to be farther away from Chicago Diner, Upton’s Breakroom, and so many other places I love dearly in The Windy City, I love being much closer to one of my all-time favorite donut spots: Glam Doll Donuts.

I started going to Glam Doll Donuts somewhere around 2014. At the time, there were no vegan donut options in Milwaukee, so any time I went on vacation, I’d try to find vegan donut shops. In fact, I have sort of a checklist for new cities I visit: What kind of dairy-free pizza, cupcakes, and donuts can I find there? And where can I play mini-golf and sing karaoke?

My quest for vegan donuts in Minneapolis didn’t disappoint. When I attended a conference in Minneapolis in the summer of 2014, I actually walked a mile and a half or so to Glam Doll Donuts from my hotel just to get my fix (as I listened to the Gone Girl audiobook – good times, memorable facial expressions for everyone passing me on the street). The store itself is so cute – pink, white, and black on the inside, with a nice retro vibe and welcoming staff. I love when I can go somewhere where there isn’t just one dairy-free or vegan option. There are 20 options for non-vegan donuts and 8 vegan options available, plus some seasonal menu items. You can really find something that matches your favorite flavor profile whenever you come.

Because it is a bit of a drive to get to Glam Doll Donuts, we usually order ahead to ensure we’re getting our favorites. My personal favorite vegan donut flavors are honestly the simplest. The Misfit is a glazed donut flavored with orange, ginger, and cinnamon. The glazed donut is an un-screwuppable classic. The Vanilla Starlet is an unfussy vanilla donut with sprinkles. I love them all. For those who are more into filled donuts, or richer flavors, you can get that, too: The Femme Fatale is loaded with raspberry curd, the Dark Angel has vanilla pastry cream filling, and the Cosmopolitan Girl is a chocolate and peanut butter-lover’s dream. Even though I enjoy these donuts as well, I keep coming back to the classics. A Misfit and a fresh cup of coffee – there’s really nothing like it.

There’s a reason that every time I came to Minneapolis, I made sure to add a trip to Glam Doll Donuts to my itinerary. It’s hard to find good raised vegan donuts anywhere, and I love that Glam Doll’s vegan donuts taste like the “real thing.” So much so that when I buy donuts to share with the family, I get them all vegan. There’s a reason they’re on my top 5 list for all-time favorite donut shops. If you’re in and around Minneapolis and you haven’t given them a try, I’d encourage you to do so ASAP. What a great way to spend a Sunday morning – tasty donuts, hot coffee, and loved ones.
