After quite a bit of radio (blog?) silence, I am back with more content, more reviews, more recipes, more everything! First up, a review of Blooming Lotus, a relatively new Milwaukee bakery. I hope you missed me because I sure missed regularly posting.
The reason for the silence? I’m in grad school, which means time has been pretty strapped lately. However, I have always felt like Dairy-Free State was a great stress-reliever, so I’ve decided to pick up posting to force myself to take breaks in between all the crazy times.
That’s enough blabbing; let’s get to the point of this post. I wanted to start things off again by writing a quick review for a relatively new business in Milwaukee – Blooming Lotus Bakery. I just tried some of their offerings a few weeks ago and was so impressed that I’ve come up with excuses to buy more things from them.
Everything in Blooming Lotus is dairy-free! If that’s your only dietary restriction, you can pick up anything in the store (or the Indoor Farmers’ Market if you happen to catch them there). All of their products are also grain-free. The bakery uses all nut flours and seed flours in their products, so they also have high fiber and protein. All of the products are vegan and also peanut-free and cane sugar-free.
Blooming Lotus’ menu is pretty impressive. The bakery offers muffins, scones, cupcakes, cookies, “rye” chips, pizza crusts, and more! I first tried banana bread and a blueberry lemon muffin (both pictured in the image above). While their treats are not as indulgent as other vegan goodies you can get elsewhere in the city (I’m lookin’ at you, Honeypie), they are healthier without that “health food” taste. When we visited the farmers’ market a couple weeks later, we picked up some granola that was amazing with coconut yogurt. I had to bring snacks for class and I decided to pick up an assortment of small cookies and cupcakes for the occasion. Everything got picked over so quickly, but I was able to snag a cashew butter cookie and half of a carrot cake cupcake, both of which were as great as I had hoped.
My verdict: Blooming Lotus is a great bakery for people with food allergies and special diets, with much wider accommodations that anywhere else I know of in the city. On top of that, their offerings are much healthier than any bakery I know of in the city. If you want to indulge but still want to feel like you’re being “good,” Blooming Lotus is a great place to visit.
