Since my post reflecting on 2019 was so long, I’ll keep this one brief. I spend 2019 focusing on “Growth.” Everything sure grew around me, to the point of overgrowth. My interests, self-reflection, career moves, and relationships grew, some of them like weeds. The last part of 2019 has felt very overwhelming, so I knew going into 2020, I wanted to choose a word that allowed for more focus, a feeling of completion, and something that could build on what I’ve started in 2019.
Cultivate your plants and your ideas
That’s how I landed on “Cultivate” as my word for 2020. Cultivating can either be used in the context of gardening, like growing and caring for a particular crop, or it can be used in terms of skill or relationship development.
To me, cultivating is not just about growing something, but also shaping and caring for something. You are making an effort to build something, oftentimes from the ground up, but the growth is intentional, and it’s given direction through cultivation.
How I’ll cultivate in 2020
That’s what I want to see in 2020. I want to take all this energy I have around career and personal projects, and give it a meaningful direction. I want to end 2020 with finished products I can publish or sell.
Shortly after this blog is published, I’ll be meeting with friends at a local coffee shop to create vision boards over our 2020 words. I’ll make sure to share it on Instagram, and probably post an updated picture here as well. I’m hoping it’ll inspire others to choose a focus word and try to make it part of their 2020 goals as well.
What do you do for resolutions? Do you pick a focus word? Write out a list? Do something entirely different? Share in the comments or tell me at dairyfreestate@gmail.com
